A German lady has lived in Palma airport, Majorca, for ten years.

The 48-year old - known locally as 'Son Sant Joan'- sleeps in the airport with her three suitcases, books and pet cat.

Giving her name as Bettina, she says she came to the Spanish island from Southern Germany. After losing her job as a waitress, she found herself penniless and homeless, so she took to living in the airport. She washes and cleans her clothes in the toilets and uses departure lounge seats as beds.

Bettina said: "One friend brings me something to eat twice a week. Sometimes people give me a bit of money as well, but I don't ask anyone for anything."

Airport workers say she is intelligent, smartly dressed, discreet and popular with the staff.
