Primark v Matalan.

29-08-2006 09:30

Primark has launched a legal battle against fellow low prices retailer Matalan.

Drapers Weekly reported that this is the first case of its kind involving two players in the low end price range.

Primark took the action after Matalan introduced a kids range with the slogan "Rebel" on tee shirts and hoodies: Primark has a Rebel range for teenage boys.

Gary Assim, head of brands for Shoosmiths legal firm, said: "Primark has built its business on sub-brands so it is understandable that it wants to protect them.

This demonstrates that today it doesn't matter who owns the brand if it is a good brand then it is worth protecting."

Primark have been involved in legal issues in the past over copyright from big name brands.

Only last year Monsoon accused them of copying several best selling items but the case settled out of court.
