4 months ago 02nd Jul 14:52

Into the sixties and a new era of Spanish cinema was beginning as José María García Escudero became the Director General of Cinema and he encouraged the efforts of the Official Cinema School to find the up and coming talented filmmakers.

But it is the Spanish film industry of today that is really thriving as world cinema is becoming ever popular with movie lovers.

Like France in recent years Spain has also produced some well known names that have enjoyed major success one of the most famous is actress Penelope Cruz.

The actress gained critical acclaim in her own country in her early career with movies such as Jamón, Jamón and Carne Trémula before finding success in Hollywood with Captain Corelli's Mandolin and Vanilla Sky.

However her Academy Award Best Actress nomination didn't come in a mainstream movie but in Spanish speaking picture Volver, which also competed for the Palme d'or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006.

This year has seen the breakthrough for actor Javier Bardem, a popular actor in Spain with movies such as Jamon, Jamon, Carne Tremula, Boca a Boca which has seen him dominate many Goya Awards, the national Spanish awards.

But this year in the Coen Brothers No Country for Old Men the actor made it into the American mainstream and his performance as killer Anton Chigurh dominating the awards season culminating in his scooping the Best Supporting Actor Oscar at this year's ceremony.

As well as success for individual stars Spanish production companies have also become popular with American movies as projects such as The Machinist, starring Christian Bale, The Others with Nicole Kidman and Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven have all been produced by Spanish companies, Kingdom of Heaven was the biggest production in the history of Spanish cinema.
