Released September 1
Far away from the new folk niche of London, in Scotland a new artist called Brendan Campbell has been causing a stir. The follow up to his EP is a digitally released single ‘Pirate Song’ released Sept 1st on Everybody’s Records. So if you’re not already familiar with this him, lets bring you up to speed.
Firstly and most startlingly obvious when you see Brendan Campbell live is his outstanding guitar skills, taking heed from another Scottish great, Burt Jansch, Brendan’s finger picking guitar style is as impressive as it is mesmerising.
The haunting tone of his voice is the kind to make a room fall silent and he makes no apologies for his strong broad accent, which adds depth and interesting rhythms to his patter.
His first EP ‘Twilight Bird’ was a four track charm released in June, its tone more subdued than The Pirate song but with comments like “astonishing debut EP” from Sunday Times Culture, it was widely commended.
Pirate Song is an upbeat tune about wasted youth, catchy and well crafted, it is another suggestion of how well rounded a songwriter and musician Brendan is. His musicality is wrapped around intricate lyrics of life growing up the south side of Glasgow.
If his music is traditional, the focus and content of his lyrics are his, sometimes challenging, life so far growing up the youngest of six children in less than privileged surroundings. He treats all his songs as living, evolving works. Between gigs he adds verses, changes things around and combines songs, no two shows are the same.
His family have always been involved in traditional Scottish folk and it is here that Brendan taught himself to play, joining celtic folk bands and traveling around Scotland, he has been carving a name for himself and now has built up a loyal fan base in his home country.
That’s not to say the rest of the UK aren’t catching up, he’s been playing dates all over to much approval and in Aug & Sept he joins Brooklyn band Clare & The Reasons on a full UK tour. As mentioned before, live is really where Brendan’s comes into his own, a truly arresting performer:
