The perfect wife is feisty and thrifty

Ideal Home Show updates 1950s Good Wife Guide

The perfect wife is argumentative and good with money, according to a re-worked ‘Good Wife Guide’ released today by The Ideal Home Show, marking the opening of its 100th show on 14 March.

The Show teamed up with ICM to produce a modern take on the fabled 1955 Good Wife Guide, which reminded women “his topics of conversation are more important than yours.” The Show found men in 2008 look for the opposite in their perfect partner, with over half 59% (equivalent to 13 million men) rating the ability to stand up to them as one of the most important qualities.

Two thirds (69%) of men also admit to longing for women who can manage the family finances, traditionally the man’s role in the household and light years away from the expectations of the 50s. Other qualities that made the list of top skills men look for include eating healthy portions (27%), enjoying a drink (22%) and allowing men to spend time with their friends (56%). However, nearly half (48%) of men still consider cooking as the top skill in a perfect wife, so food is still a good route to a man’s heart.

The Show also wanted to discover what women think men want today - and found they were mistaken! When asked what they think men look for in a partner, nearly a quarter (24%) think men look for good knowledge of sport e.g. being able to name players and understand the rules – but only 10% of men thought this was important. Nearly half (41%) of women think men hate questions like “does my bum look big in this” but only a quarter (24%) of men actually find it so, and whilst three quarters of women (72%) worry that men hate being dragged around the shops, over half (63%) of men say it’s not a problem.

Maxine Soghmanian, Ideal Home Show organiser said: “The 1955 Good Wife Guide has given us a good laugh, and discovering the 2008 equivalent has been interesting - it’s amazing to see how much we have changed since it was written. Home life has changed so much in the 100 years and the Show has been through it all. This year our “Century Street” feature lets you explore exactly how people lived in 1908 and 1958 and it’s quite an eye opener!”
