Amazon.co.uk Review In a career filled with unforced, naturalistic performances, Jeff Bridges gives one of his finest in Crazy Heart. His oft-married, booze-soaked troubadour Bad Blake has just rolled into Santa Fe when he meets Maggie Gyllenhaal's journalist Jean. "Where do all the songs come from?" she asks during their initial encounter. "Life, unfortunately", he sighs. Against Jean's better judgment, her fling with Blake blooms into a full-fledged relationship. Between gigs, Blake hangs out with the divorcée and her 4-year-old son, with whom he establishes an instant rapport, possibly because the musician is just an overgrown kid himself (and also because he hasn't seen his own boy in years). While Blake plays juke joints, his protégé, Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell, cast against type to fine effect), plays stadiums, but just when director Scott Cooper's debut seems to be going down the same path as A Star Is Born, Sweet offers his mentor an opportunity that could revive his reputation--at the expense of his still-healthy ego. Between Jean and Tommy, things start looking up for Blake until a critical error puts his stab at redemption in jeopardy. Once Robert Duvall enters the scene as Blake's favorite bartender, it's clear that Cooper has Tender Mercies in his sights, but Crazy Heart, which features music by T-Bone Burnett and rough-hewn singing by its Golden Globe-winning star, plays more like a sincere cover version than a strikingly original composition. Still, like Duvall's in Tender Mercies, Bridges's performance is Oscar-worthy. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Jeff Bridges steals the show. May 25, 2010 M. Selby (uk) 14 out of 17 found this review helpful
Jeff Bridges' incredible performance is not the only aspect of this movie that deserves praise. Bridges--who will most likely win an Oscar for his performance (sorry, Colin Firth, it was just your bad luck to deliver your best performance in the same year)--inhabits the character of Bad Blake so thoroughly and convincingly that you forget you're watching Jeff Bridges; he truly gives life to this alcoholic but talented country singer who is searching for some joy and redemption at the end of his career. Maggie Gyllenhaal is wonderful in a supporting role as Blake's girlfriend, and Colin Farrell is a genuine surprise as Blake's protégé, Tommy Sweet. (By the way, who the heck knew that Farrell--and Bridges, for that matter--could sing so well?) Bonus: the soundtrack is awesome. Interesting cinema synergy--Robert Duvall (still a working actor at the age of 79), who produced this film and has a small supporting role, won a Best Actor Oscar in 1984 for playing a character similar to Bad Blake in "Tender Mercies."
A stunniningly Good Film July 14, 2010 Dick Pearson (Newark, UK) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I watched this expecting to see just another formulaic alcoholic country singer redeems himself movie: after all it's been done before extremely well - Tender mercies - and why do we need it again?
How wrong I was! The main protagonists, Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gylenhall and Robert Duvall are superb; the music excellent; and the clichés avoided
However, it not an action movie nor is it deeply meaningful, but but is superbly acted, well sung and utterly believable.
Outstanding August 3, 2010 Spider Monkey (UK) I haven't enjoyed a film as much as `Crazy Heart' in quite some time. It has the perfect blend of amazing performances, great storyline and an awesome soundtrack. This follows Bad Blake who is an old, alcoholic country singer who has seen better times. He struggles to make ends meet and is tired and jaded by his life on the road. That is until he meets Jean (a newspaper reporter writing an article about him) and her son, Buddy, who give him something to love for. The first thing I noticed is that this film has plenty of wide open countryside scenes as Bad drives from gig to gig and the wide camera shots are truly stunning. It is sad at the start to see Bad so jaded by his life and yet his fans still obviously adore him; it lends the film a certain melancholy air from early on. In fact, this film has a gentle, slightly sad, but heartfelt feel the whole way through and Bad's relationship with Jean and Buddy really is lovely and heart warming to watch. Like I mentioned, the performances are incredible and Bridges plays the grizzled, aged country musician perfectly and the Oscar he won for this role was more than deserved. The soundtrack is a real delight in this film and turns this from a good film into a great one, the guitars and country lyrics suit this film to a tee. This isn't an all action film (thankfully), but a simple story, that is extremely well made, about one mans life, his perseverance and how he finds some meaning after years of self abuse and personal tribulation. I loved every minute and heartily recommend it.
Crazy Heart August 3, 2010 Anthony G. Winter Crazy Heart is one of the best country music movies that I have seen, Jeff Bridges must have been born to play his part in the movie, or spent a lot of time on the bottle
A WINTER
Crazy Heart DVD July 27, 2010 A. C. Delso Well-written, produced and acted (Bridges got the leading man Oscar for this). It's a deliberately downbeat story of a country musician, whose career and life are on the skids. He messes up a chance at personal happiness, just as his career picks up. The musical performances are good - could have done with more of them, in fact. A low-key, human drama, which should appeal to almost everyone.
